INSPECTION / CERTIFICATION
EXTINGUISHER INSPECTION
FIRE EXTINGUISHER(S) SHOULD BE INSPECTED
Every extinguisher needs to be inspected and certified annually. Each year a licensed technician must examine the exterior of the extinguisher, looking at 4 items: Mechanical parts, extinguishing agent, expellant means, and physical condition. While inspecting the mechanical parts, the technician will check that all handles, rivets, pins, tamper seals, and wheels are intact and free from corrosion. The extinguisher should be full, and be within the weight requirements listed on the label. The dial displaying service pressure should be in the green, usually at 100 or 195 psi. The shell of the extinguisher should be free of rust and dents, as well as any non-manufacturer or service stickers.

If a technician has determined that a unit has passed its external examination, they may then certify the unit. Each certified unit should have a yellow annual certificate identifying the date of the examination, an expiration date, what type of maintenance was performed, and the class of chemical inside. Each certificate should also be filled out with the serial number of the unit, the name and permit number of the technician, and the license number of the company.
